When should a pregnant woman start to visit the doctor?

The South Africa Department of Health guidelines recommends that pregnant women seek antenatal contact services as soon as they suspect a pregnancy or as early as the first missed menstrual period. The DOH encourages all pregnant women to attend at least eight antenatal contact visits to reduce the risk of adverse obstetric outcomes.

How many antenatal visits are vital?

A minimum of eight antenatal care contacts, with an increased number of contacts during the third trimester.

How many pregnancy scans do one have?

Most healthy women receive two ultrasound scans during pregnancy. The first is, ideally in the first trimester to confirm the due date, and the second is at 18-22 weeks to confirm normal anatomy and the gender of the baby.
